ERAU Commercial Checkride Practice Test – The All-in-One Guide to Mastering Your Checkride! 2026

In VFR Night operations, when an airplane is operated for hire, the landing light is a mandated requirement. The rationale behind this regulation primarily focuses on safety—the landing light enhances visibility for both the pilot and other aircraft, making it easier to see the runway environment during landing and takeoff, which are critical phases of flight, especially during night operations.

The requirement is part of ensuring that all aircraft equipped for hire adhere to specific safety standards. While other lights, such as anti-collision lights and position lights, contribute to overall visibility and signaling, the landing light serves a unique purpose by providing sufficient illumination for the runway, helping pilots navigate and land more safely in low-light conditions.

Positions lights and anti-collision lights provide important visibility to others but do not illuminate the area around the aircraft. Interior cabin lights are essential for comfort and allow pilots to read instruments but are not focused on the external environment or overall operational safety during night flights. Thus, the landing light is a specifically mandated light that fulfills a critical role in VFR Night flight operations for hire.
